The course on which this e-version is based, was originally commissioned by the Arup Partnership in the 1970s.

It has been run since then for prestigious clients worldwide and addresses an increasingly important aspect of structural design — understanding how the structure behaves. This is an essential first step in the design process and will lead to an approximate analysis as a check against the computer output.

Training Outcomes

By the end of the course you’ll be able to:

  • Draw the qualitative solution for the deflected shape, reactions and bending moment diagram for a range of two-dimensional frames
  • Explain the relationship between the diagrams and how each one can be checked against the other two
  • Demonstrate the internal equilibrium at nodes and reactions.

Curriculum

The Understanding Structural Behaviour course is divided into four main sections with an end of course exam in which you need to score 80% or more to pass. Multiple attempts are permitted.
